CHARACTER INFORMATION Character Name: Angela Ziegler, call sign "Mercy"
Age: 37
Canon: Overwatch
Canon Point: During the events of the "Valkyrie" comic
Character Information: Wiki!Personality: Angela experienced a devastating loss of both her parents to an airstrike at a young age, and this has scarred her deeply and affects how she views the world to this day. It has lead to a solid aversion to violence and pacifistic nature that runs beyond whether or not she's willing to throw hands personally. It has lead to deep seated grief which causes her to care objectively too much about the well being of others as a coping mechanism. It has caused her to disregard her own wellbeing in the pursuit of securing comfort and safety for others. She finds purpose in healing the broken, helping the hurt, because she was hurt. She knows what it's like to lose your world in the blink of an eye, and she won't sit by while others experience the same. It's a known way of coping with grief and loss - overcaring for others in the hopes that you can kind of drown out your own problems. Other peoples' problem can be healed, their wounds can be cleaned and stitched up, even if yours can't.
She is brilliant, studying medical science at the age of 14 years old - which by the way is devestatingly young to be dedicating yourself so completely to the care of others, like I can only speculate at the kind of childhood she had but it cannot have been a happy one. Imagine college level study burnout as a 14 year old orphan. Like WHAT. She is a prodigy in the medical field of nanobiology with a PHD and MD from her schooling years in Switzerland. She was a lead surgeon at a prominent Swiss hospital before pioneering a breakthrough in treating life-threatening injuries and illnesses. I think this choice in study says a lot about her. She learned not to prevent injury, but how to cheat death. She didn't just study preventative care or become a general doctor, she studied how to bring people back from the brink. She studied how to enter a crisis and leave with a living patient. I think this shows not only ambition and drive, but fear of mortality and loss, and a willingness to push herself to the absolute limit to prevent others from sufferring as she felt she had. She is fanatical about this one sticking point: preventing loss of life.
Angela began her career as an optimistic and naive person. She believed Overwatch would not weaponize her research and gave her all to them. She is mentioned to have been hesitant to accept the offer to work with them initially, but was persuaded by the promise of equipment and funds to stretch her research to the max. Angela doesn't half-ass things, she dedicates herself to things completely, and this offer appealed to her practical nature. She became disillusioned when Overwatch broke their word to her about developing biotic weaponry. She became a little martyr-esque when Overwatch disbanded, enduring jeers and insults from the people she was attempting to help and claiming she did not become a doctor to be thanked. I believe this shows to some degree a desire to make things right not only because she should, but because it's the purpose that keeps her alive.
All that heavy stuff being said: Angela is just a good natured, hard working, dedicated woman who seeks stability and calm above all else. She works constantly because she feels she must, but in her downtime, she will drink tea or coffee and savor the quiet. She befriends people quickly and completely. She likes to keep in touch with those she cares about, even if she's bad at it sometimes. She wants to see the good in everyone. She yearns for normalcy that she truly believes she can't have because she's too busy trying to make it happen - if that makes sense? Chasing her tail, as it were.
Angela Ziegler is, at her core, a person who has seen and experienced great suffering, and rather than break under the weight of it, she has determined that she is morally and personally obligated to negate or reapir as much of the damage done as possible. She believes that no one should have to suffer, that peace is always an option, and that violence is never the only answer, almost to the point of being naive. She trusts in facts, good will, and goodness in the hearts of the masses. Her work is often thankless, but she does it because it is the right thing to do, and because she semi-selfishly hopes that through healing and helping others, she can heal herself. She can find kindness in her heart for anyone, but does hold grudges against those she feels won't or can't do the same.

Roleplay Sample:[ The locals told her she'd become a monster. She had balked at the idea, incredulous that they believed in such things to begin with, even more aghast that they thought she'd become one. Then she saw a monster herself. She thought she knew what destruction looked like. She really did - she'd seen so much of it back home. But this was different. The ripping and the tearing and the fact that it made her...hungry. It was all too much. Even though a part of her knew it was too late the instant she saw the attack, she had tried to intervene, to the bewilderment of everyone involved. An unarmed, untransformed offworld doctor, rushing forth to interrupt a werewolf's meal.
When she came to, she had a bruise blooming across her forehead and right temple, and a slightly dislocated shoulder. There was nothing left of the human but a bloodstain on the pavement. The werewolf was long gone. She stares hard now at her reflection in the mirror of a diner's public restroom, hand shakily covering her mouth and sweat soaking her brow. ]Pull yourself together, Angela.
[ She mutters to no one in particular. Her fingers trace up to the bruise, wincing at the tender flesh there. ] You must be more careful. You cannot do any good for this world if you are dead.
[ The locals had told her she'd become...that. Maybe not a werewolf exactly, but they explained her fate to her when she pressed them on what they meant by 'monster'. She'd have to eat people, like that creature did. Even now she has to stifle indignant laughter. The very idea is preposterous. She'll believe it when she has no other choice, but for now? Angela straightens herself up and her eyes pass blankly over her wet, torn skirt and rain-soaked hair. It doesn't feel real. None of this feels real.
The shock will wear off, the locals had promised. And where had she heard that before, she wonders with the slightest hint of bitterness to the thought. The last time someone told her that, they had been wrong. That pain was still with her, even in this new and terrifying world. But that knowledge does not break her. It hardens her resolve, makes her certain that no matter what happens, she will do everything in her power to protect whatever world she is thrust into. ]They deserve that much.
[ Her voice is small, her eyes clouding over with grief. ] As insane as this may be, these people do not deserve to be
eaten. Perhaps...
[ A synthetic flesh substitute, maybe? What is it that makes human flesh matter more than animal? these "monsters", do they have a choice? Could they be given a choice? Already the wheels are turning in her mind as she runs some water in the sink, wetting her hand to wipe away some dirt smudges on her face. She arranges her hair to cover the bruise as best she can. Gathering her coat and taking a steadying breath, Angela leaves the diner. She doesn't know where exactly she's going. Perhaps to find a friendly local that might direct her to an institute of learning - an academy, a lab, a hospital would do if there is nothing else...]
